I have noticed that typing at a higher WPM (words per minute), at least for me, is about the initial fear of keeping up with that speed rather than just being imcompetent at typing at such speed.

For example, let’s say I typically average 80 words per minute; however, on one particular test, all of a sudden, I am now able to maintain around 90 WPM, and then this fear of maintaining that speed, for the sake of the rewarding feeling, would be the doom and you’d end up choking up on a particular word, ruining the test for good.

However, once you have achieved 90 WPM on a couple of tests, things can suddenly take a turn. You would notice that all of a sudden now you are actually averaging 90 WPM with no effort at all. Achieving 80 WPM would now suddenly feel like a piece of cake.

You would think you just improved your typing speed, but I have a slightly different take. It seems that this initial fear at first is more responsible for persistent lower speeds that you might be getting. Because, from my heuristics, I have noticed that once you do better at a few tests, and you feel like, “I have already achieved this; nothing interesing,” and then you suddenly can average that speed.

There was a time when my thoughts were what mad man would be able to keep up 100 WPM on average, back when my average speed was around the 50s. But now, 100 is like a nothing burger to me. I can do 100 WPM on average with no effort at all.
